Our Winery

As the new millennium began, Joe had grown the August Briggs brand enough to consider a permanent home. It was always his dream to do this in the Napa Valley, and in 2002 he and Sally purchased a small piece of property on the south end of the town of Calistoga, along the Silverado Trail. Joe began working immediately designing a winery that would reflect both his own and the wines’ personality. His idea was to build state-of-the-art winemaking technology into a simple barn-like design that would look like it had been part of Napa Valley for a hundred years.

The winery that is our home today was completed in advance of the 2004 harvest. The exterior of the 8,000 square foot building is whitewashed redwood, with a corrugated steel roof, a classic California barn shape. Inside are three distinct divisions. In front, visitors enter an intimate, bright tasting room area that has a friendly country feel. Upstairs are the winery offices.

Right behind the tasting room, visitors can look into the temperature-controlled barrel room, where recent vintages rest quietly before bottling; frequent barrel tastings for our guests are also held there.

Finally, large sliding wood doors lead to the covered crush pad and fermentation tank area, where all the harvest activity takes place, from hand sorting grapes to pressing the grapes before the wines are placed in barrel for aging.

Very simple, very controlled, all for the sake of quality of our many small lots of wine. We are proud to welcome our visitors to the home of August Briggs wines.
