Four Things You Should Know about August Briggs Winery
1. We are family owned and operated
August “Joe” Briggs and his family started his own wine brand with the 1995 vintage, and he continues to run the winery today with the help of family members and dedicated employees, our family “adoptees.” Our small size provides Joe total control over the quality of August Briggs wines from vineyard to bottle. Bob and Betty Briggs, Joe’s parents, have worked in our tasting room, making new friends for the winery. Aaron and Jesse Inman, Joe’s nephews, work in the winery cellar and tasting room. The entire winery has a real family feel to it, with a warm welcome for all our visitors.
2. Our winemaking philosophy
While Joe’s first love in wine was Pinot Noir, he has expanded beyond that to a broad portfolio of wines to provide a variety of taste experiences to our customers. Joe believes that given great vineyard sources to work with, he can create wines that are well-balanced and delicious at a young age with great fruit character, but that are also serious enough to age with grace. Beginning with top quality grapes from our vineyard partners, Joe gently extracts optimum flavor for the wine without losing their delicate balance. Realizing that people drink wines at a variety of occasions, Joe styles the wines to work well with flavorful foods as well as on their own.
3. Our vineyard sources
Joe has had over twenty years experience in working with great vineyards all over California and Oregon, and selects true “gem” vineyards to work with in Napa, Sonoma and Lake counties for his own wines. In this way he can make multiple expressions of the same varietal, like our variety of Pinot Noirs or Cabernet. Joe is constantly searching for vineyards that provide perfect growing conditions for a particular varietal, and just as importantly, vineyard owners who take optimal care of their vines while maintaining farming practices for a sustainable future. All August Briggs wines reflect their unique vineyard origins.
