Last Thursday we had our second day of bottling for the year (the last will be in July). Once again the Ryan Mcgee trailer pulled up next to the winery, with much better weather than in February...

Well, our very cool early spring has continued into the fourth week of April - this is well beyond what is normally considered dangerous for frost (mid-April). As late as Monday night temps throughout Napa and Sonoma counties dipped to the 27F range. Some longtime farmers have called this spring the frostiest in years, perhaps going back as much as 30 years!...

Several of their fine writers do their own blogging, and this one was from Bruce Sanderson. I thought this was a very interesting post, coming from a magazine that is, essentially, telling thousands and thousands of people what they should buy and drink every issue via their scores and reviews. Bruce basically writes in this post that all wine drinkers should taste for themselves and decide what they like – BRAVO! Our owner Joe Briggs and I couldn’t agree more...

After being away for a few days, I went over to the 100 year old Zin vines at the Luvisi vineyard, expecting to see some serious green growth after budbreak. As you can see (click READ)....

Frost in wine country is always a danger this time of year, up until about mid-April, after which overnight temperatures rarely reach the freezing mark. So between now (with budbreak) and then is one of the dangerous times in the vineyard. A frost can quickly turn the new vine growth black and kill it off. So when the temperature sensors set off the alarms, how does the vineyard manager deal with potential frost?
